CRUES CALLS FOR A WEEK OF STRIKE AND ACTION AGAINST AUSTERITY
As cuts to education continue to deepen, as institutions face severe space shortages, as buildings crumble and hiring freezes severely impair critical public services, the government persists in normalizing austerity. At the same time, the cost of living is skyrocketing, the housing crisis is worsening, and precariousness is becoming the norm for students.
Postsecondary education was once a progressive social project. CRUES asserts that it is time to demand that it become one again. This so-called “normal course of things” is far from inevitable: it is a political construction, and it is time to oppose it.
In the face of the dismantling of the social safety net, the abandonment of public services, the proliferation of anti-union legislation, and the neglect of the most vulnerable by those in power, collective organization is imperative.
Let's refuse social peace. Let's strike. To organize is to refuse isolation. It is to transform indignation into a balance of power. It is to reclaim our classrooms, our general assemblies, and public space to defend a free, accessible, and high-quality education, without economic, cultural, or social barriers and to make education a true tool of collective emancipation and the democratization of knowledge.
We will not remain passive in the face of growing precarity. We must take part in the political and reject the status quo. That is why CRUES calls for a week of strike and action against austerity from March 23 to 27.
Toward a strike for free, accessible, and high-quality education.
